Health/Grooming
Horse grooming is an essential part of riding. Regardless of horse type or riding style, grooming should always be a regular part of your equestrian routine. From hoof inspection and cleaning to mane brushing and washing, grooming is crucial to the overall health and happiness of your horse.
A horse's owner is its first and last defense against disease and injury. One of the reasons grooming is so important is it familiarizes riders with their horses' bodies. If, you take the time to groom your horse before and after every ride, you will be more sensitive to its quirks. Subsequently, wounds will be easier to spot.
Contrary to popular belief, grooming doesn't have to be a time consuming ritual. Once you become familiar with the basics, you should be able to complete the process in minutes. It's usually best to start with hooves. Using a hoof-pick, remove any miscellaneous rocks or dirt particles and check for cracks. Next, brush your horse's coat and mane. Barns are dusty places where dirt accumulates like mad. A clean horse is a happy horse, so be generous with the brush.
Every week or so, give your horse a bath. Use a gentle shampoo and conditioner and make sure that its mane is given proper attention. Remember grooming is as much about emotional well-being as it is physical. Use the time to bond with your horse. Doing so will improve your relationship, and subsequently your riding.
